It was not until the 5th. of December that the junk-
master finally presented his petition and I at once
instituted enquiries into the whereabouts of the "Tai Ana.
I could find no vessel of that nume on our register, but I

discovered that a launch natted "Tai ^n* (*)
now under
the Chinese flag, hud flow the British flag as recently
ne December 1907, whom she was transferred to a Chinese
owner.
This launch, I was informed, had lately been running
to Kongmoon, and I therefore came to the conclusion that
this was the vessel rofarred to. I should mention that in
despatches received from the Chinese Authorities the words Lun chien (A/E) are used for 'stoumer" and "stoanlaunch”.
To make quite sure of her identity a memorandum was sent
on December 9th. to the Colonial Secretary in Tongkung
enclosing copy of the plaintiff's petition and enquiring
whether any launch named "Tai An" was rogistored in Hongkong
